Tegan was raised on the family farm and as her first love was horses, she could easily have followed an equestrian career.

Her focus, however, changed from horses to property when she had a work experience placement with a friend of her father who was an estate agent. She took to it immediately and loved working there. “Every day was different. I wasn’t in the office all the time and we’d often be out meeting people,” she says.

The property bug had well and truly bitten so she decided to ask her father’s friend for advice on what course she could pursue to become qualified in the field. She chose to do a property course available at institutes of technology such as DIT and LIT.

Tegan also came through the Savills Graduate programme in 2008 and is now a surveyor with Savills specialising in retail and loves her job, especially because every day is diverse and throws up some new challenge

“Every day is completely different. One day I could be out driving around and inspecting retail units or meeting potential tenants and showing them around retail locations. And the next day I could be in the office writing reports and presentations.

“Or I could be off in places such as London having conferences with retailers and agents. Every day is different and challenging.

“I ended up specialising in retail and there’s a nice fashion aspect to it and you’re looking at shopping centres and thinking what would be a great fit for that centre? Who’d be a great client there? What retailer or brand would work well there?” White says many people probably think she sells houses and don’t realise there are many departments in an agency such as Savills.

‘Really enjoy it’

“My job involves looking for tenants for vacant units in retail outlets. So we have to find clients that would be a good fit for say a shopping centre such as the Pavilions in Swords.

“We’d ascertain what sort of retailer would be a good match and then market and pitch them the Pavilions, the area of Swords and Ireland.

“So we could be pitching to retailers such as Topshop or Peacocks and many others.Surveying offers something different every day, I really enjoy it here at Savills – the work is interesting, challenging and very rewarding.”
