Roscrea golf club in Co Tipperary gained a new course record recently during the eighth annual All-Ireland captains' prize winners competition.
Playing in the ladies event was Nenagh's five handicapper Karen Maguire, who rewrote the record books when she returned a gross score of one-under-par 71. Maguire had birdies on the fifth and eighth holes going out, while she also birdied the par five 12th, a tremendous score which gave her two nines of 21 points and a total of 42 points.
However, she didn't manage to take away the top prize. That honour went to Parknasilla's Barbara Murray (31) with 46 points with Eileen O'Driscoll (38) from the Hibernian club in second on 42 points, with Sharon Beattie from Larne in third.
Meanwhile, in the men's competition, the top honour went to former Dublin Gaelic football star Barney Rock. The eight handicapper from Ashbourne had a great score of 42 points. The runner-up was Shannon's Colm Reidy (11) also with 44 points, with Ray Sexton of New Ross (14) in third on 43 points.
