A new era in the history of Abbeyleix took place on Sunday when president of the GUI Paddy Murphy officially opened their new 18 hole course.
For 105 years it had been a nine hole course, but on Sunday the new layout was opened bringing about a rapid transformation in the course. Construction on the new design only began two years ago and already the members have voiced their approval of the Mel Flanagan designed par 72 course.
In the new course water comes into play on ten of the holes, where previously there had been no such hazards at all. Flanagan admitted that his job was helped by both the natural contours of the land and the fantastic soil, which in areas is 82% sand based.
Anybody who may be interested in trying out the new design can do so later this month as on Saturday September 30th and October 1st, the club is holding an open four person team event. Societies will be welcome from April next year.
