DANIEL AGGER has admitted he is facing an uncertain future at Liverpool and blamed the club for his failure to commit to a new long-term contract at Anfield. The Denmark international has emerged as a transfer target for Milan after entering the final 18 months of his existing Liverpool contract and having been unable to reach agreement on an extension.
Agger says he is still awaiting a response from the Anfield hierarchy to the first and only negotiations with his agent, Per Steffensen, that took place last November. His comments echo the manager Rafael Benitez’s recent criticism that “the club has been too slow on Agger’s contract”.
Agger said: “The ball is with Liverpool right now. We have only had one meeting with Liverpool. At that meeting at the start of November I was told that the club would come back to me quickly but that hasn’t happened. Now there have been 12 weeks since we spoke together.”
The 24-year-old can invoke the Webster Ruling in the summer and buy out the final year of his current contract, but claimed; “I cannot relate to that right now” and reiterated his intention to remain at Liverpool. He also claimed to be uninterested in the offers he has received so far to leave Anfield. “It is an annoying situation . . .,” the defender said. “They were the ones who told me they wanted to come back quickly. Honestly, I don’t have any clue if they want to extend this contract.”
