France juggled with their wealth of talent at centre, while New Zealand have handed Daniel Carter the outhalf berth ahead of this weekend of Test action.

France, who take on Australia at the Stade de France on Saturday, have recalled Tony Marsh at centre in place of Yannick Jauzion, who was named the country's international player of the year last month.

New Zealand-born Marsh was a member of France's 2003 World Cup squad after recovering from cancer, but missed their grand slam triumph in the Six Nations earlier this year because of a shoulder injury.

Jauzion drops to the bench, but could end up in Saturday's starting line-up if Traille is ruled out after suffering an injury in squad training yesterday.

The All Blacks named Carter as outhalf for the opening match of their four-Test tour of Europe against Italy in Rome on Saturday.

With Carlos Spencer injured and the experienced Andrew Mehrtens rested for the tour, Carter, Luke McAlister and Aaron Mauger - all of whom play regularly at centre - were coach Graham Henry's options to lead the back line.

But 22-year-old Carter got the nod with McAlister and Mauger named as alternates on the bench for the Stadio Flaminio match.

Henry's starting line-up also included two new caps, with Saimone Taumoepeau at loosehead prop and Conrad Smith at centre.

"It's a big step up to Test match rugby but Saimone's got a very good attitude to scrummaging, which is why we picked him," said Henry of Taumoepeau, who has yet to play in Super 12.

England's new head coach Andy Robinson last night suffered further disruption to his carefully laid plans for his first match in charge when Wasps' back-row forward Joe Worsley had to pull out of Saturday's game against Canada at Twickenham.

Worsley has failed to recover from the leg injury he suffered in a club game against Harlequins last Friday night and will be replaced by Gloucester's 26-year-old flanker Andy Hazell, who will win his first cap on the open side as Lewis Moody switches over to number six.

Robinson got a swift reaction to his revamped side with the retirement of hooker Mark Regan, disgruntled at his omission from the team for Saturday's clash.

In other matches, Wales host Romania in Cardiff on Friday, while Scotland take on Japan at McDiarmid Park in Perth.

Wales coach Mike Ruddock has handed 6ft 9in Newport Gwent Dragons lock Luke Charteris a first Test match start. And Charteris' lineout colleague will be Welsh rugby's record cap-holder, 35-year-old Gareth Llewellyn, who makes his 91st appearance since being selected for an international debut against New Zealand in 1989.
