TWO surprising, but well deserved, away wins have radically altered the top of the second division. Having started the day in fourth position, Terenure produced a first rate performance against Dungannon to move them, into the promotion zone. Sunday's Well are the club forced to make way, and they contributed to their own slide down the table by losing at home to Clontarf.
But it is Terenure who will take most satisfaction from the day building on their impressive recent form to turn over Dungannon with room to spare. Despite another productive line-out performance from Jeremy Davidson, Dungannon couldn't match Terenure's urgency which produced four tries.
Ashley Blair kept the home side in contention with three first half penalties, but Terenure took over completely in the second half with Girvan Dempsey converting tries by David Coleman, Niall Hogan and Paul Hennebry, to add to his conversion of George James's first half touchdown. It may have been hard to see Dungannon losing two matches in their quest to return to the first division, but now they will have to sort themselves out pretty quickly before the situation becomes critical.
Sunday's Well also found themselves taking too much for granted and paying for the mistake. With Pat Foley and Philip Quinn in excellent form, Clontarf gave Sunday's Well a hard time up front. The result was a high rate of penalties conceded, and, Mark Woods managed an accurate performance to succeed with four from five in a 12-9 scoreline.
Greystones didn't do themselves any harm either, and having finished the first phase of the league in mid-table, now they are suddenly one place away from promotion. and with a game in hand. Kevin Hogan got the only try of the day against Wanderers at Lansdowne Road as Richie Murphy again turned in a tremendous goal kicking display with five penalties and a conversion.
Over at Donnybrook, Bective kept their hopes alive thanks to four Shane Buckley penalties which separated them from NIFC who remain pointless. Dolphin are similarly handicapped, despite running up their highest tally of the campaign so far. It was not enough however to overcome Malone; not that it matters a great deal, for the league restructure has saved Dolphin and NIFC for another season. Whatever else the remaining matches provide. relegation battles won't be on the agenda.
