Former West Ham United midfielder Martin Allen is heading for a move into management after holding talks with National League First Division side Cobh Ramblers. Allen (32), now at first division Portsmouth, has been given permission to speak to Cobh by Portsmouth manager Terry Fenwick.

"I would dearly love to move into management and now I must decide whether this is the right move for me," Allen said.

"It would be a great place to start a managerial career and it's a good chance - but I never thought it would arrive from Ireland.

"I will be speaking to Pompey to see how they feel before I make any decisions but they know how much I want to do this," added Allen, who applied for the manager's job at Reading in the summer.

Meanwhile, Karel Poborsky has completed his transfer from Manchester United to Benfica.

The Czech Republic winger agreed to the move at the weekend and the Portuguese side, managed by Graeme Souness, and United tied up the final loose ends to rubber-stamp the deal yesterday.

Poborsky has joined Benfica for an undisclosed fee, 18 months after he arrived at Old Trafford in a £3.5 million move from Slavia Prague.

United assistant secretary Ken Ramsden said: "The formalities have been done and Karel Poborsky's move to Benfica has been completed."

The 25-year-old failed to win a regular place on the right side of the United midfield, mainly due to the emergence of David Beckham.

Poborsky faced not having his work permit renewed at the end of the season because he was falling below the target of playing in 75 per cent of matches and United manager Alex Ferguson admitted that was the main reason why he let him go.

Sheffield Wednesday chairman Dave Richards is to have fresh talks with Hajduk Split in a bid to salvage the deal for Macedonian international Goce Sedloski, who failed a medical at Hillsborough before Christmas.

Split say they are happy with the results of a second medical that was held after the central defender returned to Croatia.

The transfer now hinges on whether Split will accept new terms being offered by Wednesday, who had agreed a fee of £1.75 million before stalling when routine tests showed that Sedloski had a pelvic condition that may lead to problems in future years.

Manager Ron Atkinson said: "We are still hoping to clinch a restructured deal where we pay a deposit and further payments linked to games. It depends on whether they will accept it."
