Motorsport: A Brazilian victory is very much on the cards at Mondello Park on Sunday, when Bruno Senna lines up for two rounds of the British Formula Three Championship, in which the new motor racing sensation is second in the standings on 81 points behind leader Mike Conway on 86.
In 1982 a young and relatively unknown Brazilian Ayrton Senna da Silva scored an emphatic Formula Ford 2000 victory at the Kildare track.
Three years later he scored his first two of 41 Grand Prix wins and went on to win three World Championships. Ayrton Senna, widely acknowledged as one of the fastest and most talented Formula One drivers of all time, was tragically killed in the San Marino Grand Prix of 1994.
Today the Senna legend lives in motor racing through Ayrton's nephew Bruno Senna, born in Sau Paulo a year after his uncle's Irish win of 24 years ago. Already Bruno is being tipped as a future Formula One driver, but right now his priority is to beat his Raikkonen Robertson team-mate Conway in the prestigious British F3 Championship which was won by Ayrton Senna in 1983.
They both drive Dallara-Mercedes F3 cars, backed by current F1 star Kimi Raikkonen, in the fiercely competitive British series, and for which there is a full entry for the two Irish rounds.
Run by the Carlow Car Club, Ireland's International two-day meeting also features two rounds of the British GT Championship, both over 60 minutes, tomorrow and Sunday.
