Golf: Overnight leader Stuart Appleby was tied with Shigeki Maruyama as the pair finished the second round of the Sony Open in Hawaii with a two-shot lead.

Appleby followed up yesterday’s 65 with a round of 66 for a 10-under-par 130 where he was joined by Maruyama, who equalled yesterday’s effort of 65 at the Waialae Country Club.

The pair are two ahead of the trio of Roland Thatcher, Steve Marino and Mark Wilson who are eight under par.

A six-strong group, including England’s Justin Rose and Matt Kuchar, who tied for sixth at last year’s US Open, are a further shot adrift.

Maruyama, of Japan, again matched his lowest career round at Honolulu and, like yesterday, sunk eight birdies and three bogeys.

Australian Appleby was not quite as consistent as yesterday, hitting six birdies and two bogeys.

Anthony Kim, Daniel Summerhays and Aaron Baddeley all hit 64s but are not threatening the lead with Kim and Summerhays tied for 20th and Baddeley one of a group in a tie for 43rd.

Sunday will see both the third and fourth rounds take place after heavy rains washed out Thursday and postponed the start of the competition until Friday.
