World Ranking: 12
Coach: Hector Mendez. 'Pipo, a former international, took over the coaching of the Pumas in July when the previous incumbent Jose Luis Imhoff was ousted in a coup by the players and then President of the Argentine Rugby Union Luis Gradin. A 50 year old psychiatrist, Mendez is not noted for his tact and won't tolerate outside interference. He is alleged to get on well with former All Black Alex Grizz Wyllie but that will be put to the test if things turn out adversely.
Tactical turn: Reknowned scrummagers who will be a match for any side in the tournament in that respect - they gave Wales a very hard time in the front fine earlier this year. They pioneered a technique of their own which focuses the bulk of the pressure through the hooker. Possesses a superb scrumhalf in Agustin Pichot and his partnership with Gonzalo Quesada will be crucial. Captain and centre Lisandro Arbizu is their midfield general. To describe Argentina as simply grinders would be to ignore the flair and handling ability they possesses behind the scrum. Harnassing that cocktail is the priority.
Star turn: Agustin Pichot. Brilliant scrumhalf and the architect of Argentina's comeback against Ireland in the recent international. Great balance, good pass, quick and with the ability to make and take opportunities. When Richmond were swallowed up by London Irish Pichot was snapped up by Bristol. He is a leader on the pitch and one to whom Argentina will turn. Given a decent supply of ball from his pack, Pichot will be a huge threat to any opposition.
Verdict: Play in the opening match of the tournament against Wales and this will be a tough introduction. Their next match is against Manu Samoa and irrespective of their first result this game will be crucial. Shouldn't experience too many problems up front but as Ireland demonstrated, if you can shut them down there, they have a tendency to struggle. Realistically could fill first to fourth in the group. Disquiet in the camp in recent times suggest they may end up third.
Final thoughts: ["]The team must now focus on the tournament and I feel that being in camp in Wales everybody will be focused on the job ahead. We will be ready.["] (Alex Wyllie, assistant coach).
