Argentina names Latin Cup squad

Argentina have named four English-based rugby players in their squad for this month's Latin Cup competition

Argentina have named four English-based rugby players in their squad for this month's Latin Cup competition. Bath forwards Federico Mendez and German Llanes, plus the Richmond pair Agustin Pichot and Rolando Martin are selected for matches against France, Italy and Romania between October 18th and 26th.

Hooker Mendez has not played since dislocating his shoulder during the Pumas' 46-20 first Test defeat by England in Buenos Aires last May.

Second row forward Llanes is struggling to get a regular first team place, so Bath may not miss either player for important Allied Dunbar Premiership fixtures with Bristol and Leicester.

Richmond scrum-half Pichot and flanker Martin are ruled out of their club's league encounters against Harlequins on Saturday week, and Newcastle seven days later.

The Pumas' selectors have handed captaincy duties to lock Pedro Sporleder, replacing Brive centre Lisandro Arbizu, who skippered Argentina during England's recent six-match tour.

Three French towns - Auch, Lourdes and Tarbes - will host the Latin Cup tournament, which sees France as firm favourites.
