CYCLING:PEZULA RIDER Adam Armstrong won one of Ireland's toughest one-day races yesterday, proving quicker than four breakaway companions at the end of the Des Hanlon Memorial in Carlow.

The day's crucial move came inside the first 10 kilometres of racing and five remained up front coming in to the finish.

Peter Hawkins (Usher Insulations) was second in the gallop to the line, with Seán Lacey (Eurocycles), Hugh Mulhearne (Dan Morrissey) and Ryan Conor taking the remaining places in the top five.

Conor had done the important work to set up team-mate Armstrong for the win, his third of the season.

The 20-year-old had built form by taking part in the Intaka Tech World View Challenge races in South Africa last month.

Elsewhere, Peter Wilson (Maryland) won the Downpatrick to Armagh Classic while Glen Kinning was best in the John Moore Memorial.
