Digest: The United States beat the Rest of the World 14-10 to retain the UBS Cup at Kiawah Island, South Carolina, yesterday.

Led by Arnold Palmer, the Americans won 7½ points out of a possible 12 in the last-day singles at Cassique Golf Club after leading overnight 6½ to 5½.

US Ryder Cup captain Hal Sutton halved the final match with his European opposite number Bernhard Langer.

The Rest of the World team have never won the Ryder Cup-style event for golfers over 40 since it was first held in 2001.

US Q-SCHOOL: Des Smyth after rounds of 69 68 72 68 and 68 is well place with one round to go in the Champions Tour qualifying schoool in Florida. Smyth on 15 under par is tied for fifth place four shots behind leader Don Reese.

NATIONWIDE TOUR: Richie Coughlan and Keith Nolan qualified for the final stage of the US Nationwide Tour qualifying on December 1st-6th after the second stage in Florida. Coughlan on 15 under par after rounds of 75 65 65 68 tied for fifth place while Nolan got through on 10 under par 278 in 14th place.

ASIAN TOUR: Tiger Woods won his first strokeplay event of the season with an eight-shot victory in the Dunlop Phoenix tournament in Miyazaki, Japan, yesterday.

The former world number one was never in any danger, holding a 10-stroke lead going into the final round, even though his three-under round of 67 was bettered by second-placed Ryoken Kawagishi's 65.

Woods finished 16 under par, but his final round, which included five birdies, was not without its errors.

It was Woods' first strokeplay victory since October 2003, when he won the WGC American Express Championship in Atlanta.

South Korea's KJ Choi was third after a 65 - his best round of the week - lifted him to six under.

Sweden's Daniel Chopra finished in a tie for fifth at four under par while defending champion Thomas Bjorn was a shot further back in seventh place.

LPGA TOUR: Annika Sorenstam beat Cristie Kerr in a sudden-death play-off to capture her third ADT Championship title, 56th career Tour win and eighth victory this season in Palm Beach.
