Athlone Town - 3 Tullamore - 0: Athlone secured their place in the third round with a solid victory over their midlands rivals at St Mel's Park last night.

Athlone controlled matters in the first half and led after eight minutes through Adrian Murphy's long-range effort.

Michael Collins and Graham O'Keeffe both went close for Athlone before Murphy doubled the First Division side's lead on 31 minutes when he converted Damian Rushe's precise pass.

Former Athlone player Keith Colsh was unfortunate not to score on 61 minutes when his brilliant free-kick hit the crossbar.

Full credit must go to the non-league outfit as they kept plugging away but Athlone could have netted their third goal when Murphy was denied from close range by Martin Cunningham.

Murphy did get his hat-trick in the final minute when he slotted home Stephen Gavin's cross.
