A two-month-old baby and his family had a miraculous escape at Southwell yesterday after a loose horse ran amok.

Lee Robert Marshall was in his pushchair with his grandmother Maureen Marshall when Formidable Flame burst out of the stalls, smashed through the rails and into the public enclosure.

As the crowd scattered Mrs Marshall and the pushchair were knocked over, as was the baby's father Paul Marshall.

The horse, due to run in a race at 3 p.m., continued through the crowd before eventually being caught in the main betting ring.

The Marshall family were taken to the racecourse's first aid centre where a check up by the racecourse doctor revealed no serious injuries.

The baby's mother, Katherine Price, said: "It's a miracle my baby wasn't killed. The doctor has examined him and he seems fine but we are taking him to Kingsmill Hospital in Nottingham for a check up."
