Modern PentathlonIreland's Eanna Bailey qualified for his first modern pentathlon final at World Cup level yesterday at Rostov in Russia, writes Margie McLoone. The 21-year-old from Swords, Co Dublin, produced an excellent run/shoot event to move from 20th position to 12th to earn his place in tomorrow's final.
There was further success for the Irish team on Thursday when Natalya Coyle made it through today’s women’s final. Arthur Lanigan-O’Keeffe had already qualified for the finals at the first three World Cups and was looking four from four while Eanna Bailey had yet to make the cut. Both were seeded in Group B. In the fencing Lanigan-O’Keeffe was unable to shake off a muscle strain and a precautionary decision was made to withdraw from the competition.
Bailey, who had struggled with his fencing performances, had a tally of 14 victories and 20 defeats for 760 points and dropped outside the top 18 qualification positions. However, he finished strongly in the shooting to climb to 12th place and a place in Sunday’s final.
The Finals for World Cup 4 will be streamed live at pentathlon.org.
