SOCCER ROUND-UP: Dublin City University - with the Bane brothers as the pivotal figures - carried off the Mauritius Cup for the first time, beating UCD 2-1 at Dangan, Galway, yesterday.

The women's tournament for the Chilean Cup called for even greater reserves of energy as both semi-finals as well as the decider went to extra-time before Trinity emerged with the laurels. They defeated UCC 3-2 in a shoot-out after neither side could score.

In the Mauritius competition, UCD beat UUJ 3-1 in the morning while DCU had a tougher semi-final against UCC before a 'golden goal' by Eamon Bane decided the issue, 2-1. DCU, with the greater incentive, were the sharper side in the first half of the final. Jim Dunne slotted them into the lead following a short corner and although Andrew McFarlane scored a quick equaliser, a clinical drag flick by David Bane clinched it for DCU.

It seemed that Trinity midfielder Aiofe Mitchell, who achieved the vital breakthrough in the semi-final defeat of Limerick, would break the deadlock in the women's final but in the end it was captain Emma Needham who held her nerve to put away the decisive stroke in the shoot-out. The holders, Trinity (men) and UCD (women) - both eliminated in the pool stages - won the Plate finals, beating NUIG and Queens respectively.
