European Soccer/ Round-up: A 2-0 victory by Barcelona at Villarreal, their seventh consecutive league win, moved the champions back to the top of the Primera Liga last night.
The Catalans have 31 points, the same as Osasuna who earlier beat Malaga 2-1, but are top on goal difference.
Both of Barcelona's goals were a touch lucky with the first, on 23 minutes, an own goal by Villarreal defender Juan Manuel Pena. And then, in the 63rd minute, Deco's shot deflected off Pena's shoulder to fool goalkeeper Sebastian Viera. It was Villarreal's first defeat in 10 league outings. Barcelona had Mexico defender Rafael Marquez sent off two minutes from time.
Real Madrid had to survive the sending off of David Beckham to record a 1-0 win over local rivals Getafe at the Bernabeu on Saturday night. Ronaldo marked his return to action with a well taken first-half goal which ultimately gave Real a badly needed win. But in the 58th minute Beckham was sent off for a rash tackle on Getafe striker Riki, and the England captain was then seen to exchange words with visiting coach Bernd Schuster. The win moves Real Madrid up to fourth.
Meanwhile, Juventus opened up an eight-point lead at the top of Serie A after Mauro Camoranesi struck an 88th minute winner in a 2-1 victory at Fiorentina yesterday.
Former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira was racially abused during the game according to his team-mate Emerson. "Vieira has been the victim of racist insults," said Emerson after the game. "It's very sad to see that something like this still happens."
Juventus took the lead through French forward David Trezeguet, but Fiorentina striker Giampaolo Pazzini brought the home side level six minutes before the break. Fabio Capello's side rode their luck at times with Fiorentina hitting the woodwork three times, including a Luca Toni shot in the 75th minute.
Camoranesi scored the winner two minutes from the end of normal time after Trezeguet had outjumped a hesitating Giuseppe Pancaro to put the winger through on goal.
