The long-delayed clash of the Barretts - Sean from Cork and and Francie from Galway - in the final of the national light welterweight division, will be decided in the National Stadium in Dublin on Friday night as a feature bout to the Ireland-Sweden match.
The reason for the delay of the light-welter final was caused by a computer failure in the semi-final and legal opinion ordered that the match between Sean Barrett and Mark Wickham from Enniscorthy had to be re-boxed. Barrett won, and thereby set up a clash with his namesake Francie.
For the international match, Sweden are sending eight of their national champions while Ireland will put out seven current champions. The Irish team includes two sets of brothers - Terry and Aodh Carlyle and Alan and Stephen Reynolds.
The bill seems extremely attractive. Head-to-head bouts between national champions are scheduled at bantam, lightweight, middleweight, light-heavy, heayweight and super heavy. The Irish champions at these weights are, respectively, Damien McKenna (Holy Family, Drogheda), Aodh Carlyle (Sacred Heart, Dublin), Conall Carmichael (Holy Trinity, Belfast), Alan Reynolds (St Joseph's Sligo), Stephen Reynolds (St Joseph's) and John Kinsella (Crumlin).
Their Swedish opponents will be Majid Jelili, John H Larbi, Thomas Karlsson, Giovani Alverez, Kwamena Turkson and Johan Thor Bjornsson.
At lightweight, Larbi, who is only 22, has been the Swedish champion for the last four years and has won a European bronze medal as well as competing in the Olympics and World championships.
At light-welterweight, Michael Yikealo is a three-time Swedish champion while Karlsson is the national title holder for the last two years at middleweight and Turkson has won four titles at heavyweight on the trot.
The first bout goes into the ring at 7.30 and the Irish title fight is scheduled as the fifth of the 12-bout programme.
