Barry to get spread of codes

Unlike the bickering that is evident in certain counties regarding duel status, Wexford managers Séamus Murphy and Pat Roe have agreed to share the multiple talents of Redmond Barry.

Essentially they leave the final choice up to the player, but with the hurlers' higher-stakes game in Thurles taking precedence this weekend, Murphy will release Barry to play football against Down on on March 20th despite their match against Limerick.

Also, the managers have colluded to ensure he does not suffer from burnout.

"He's 24 years old, so it's possible for him to do this," said Murphy, "when he is 27 or 28 it will be more difficult. We're comfortable that we can find a balance. There will be no ultimatum and we intend to take it week by week."

"Ideally we would like to have him every week," said Roe, "but it will have to depend on what matches are on. It's not ideal, but I spoke with Séamus earlier in the season and we agreed to try and accommodate the player."

The hurlers have a greater need for Barry this week as injuries have ruled Eoin Quigley, Malachy Travers and Colm Kehoe out of the initial starting line-up to face Tipperary.

The footballers travel to Markievicz Park to face a Sligo side who are on a downward spiral.

Nicky Lambert is another potential duel player, but he is just returning from a broken leg he sustained against Kildare in the championship last June.

Roe hands goalkeeper Anthony Masterson his league debut, Lambert returns to midfield for a first start, while Kieran Kennedy replaces Barry in the forwards.

"It's a long trip for us and we'll have to overnight, so from that perspective it's not going to be easy. Nevertheless, we have to say to ourselves that we are good enough to beat Sligo, regardless of where we play them. That is what we must do on Sunday at all costs," continued Roe.

In other team news, Brendan Devenney will not be available for Donegal's Division One A match with Kerry on Sunday at MacCumhaill Park due to soccer commitments with Limavady United. However, Damien Diver and Christy Toye are expected to come back in, although Adrian Sweeney is a doubt.

The Mayo team to face Offaly on Sunday at Tullamore shows one change from the side that defeated Cork last weekend with Claremorris's Gary Mullins replacing Pat Kelly in the half back line.

In Division Two A, Roscommon have named an unchanged side for their tie against Fermanagh in Enniskillen.

In hurling, Dublin travel to Walsh Park in Waterford on Sunday without Ronan Fallon, but the St Vincent's club player is expected to be available for both football and hurling under-21 panels for the rest of the year.

The GAA have advised supporters attending the AIB All Ireland club finals at Croke Park on St Patrick's Day to purchase their tickets in advance in order to avoid possible delays at ticket outlets on the day of the games.

Owen Mulligan has been ruled out of Tyrone's clash with Cork on Sunday by a hamstring injury.

The Cookstown man was forced out of last weekend's win over Offaly after just 18 minutes by the injury.

On that occasion he was replaced by Martin Penrose, who scored three points, but it's Colm McCullagh who gets the nod for the trip to Munster.

Joe McMahon makes his first start of the season as replacement at right half back for Conor Gormley, who picked up a straight red card in last Sunday's Healy Park tie.

Manager Mickey Harte appears to have revisited his policy of rotating his goalkeepers, with Pascal McConnell, who lost out to John Devine last time out, back as the last line of defence.
