BARRY TOWN were the toast of Wales as they came back from an almost impossible position to knock out Hungary's Budapest Vasutas in a thrilling penalty shoot out.
The League of Wales team were 3-1 down from the first leg in this UEFA Cup qualifying round tie, but forced extra time with a performance that thrilled a capacity 2,500 crowd at their Jenner Park home.
Then, after holding out against a late onslaught from the Hungarian league runners up, they coolly slotted home four penalties while Hungarians Jorge Bognar and Zoltan Bukszegi failed to hit the target.
Barry were inspired by player coach Garry Barnett, who never stopped running in his bid to get them back into the game.
Barnett led from the front - just failing to lob goalkeeper Zoltan Vegh after 10 minutes, before former Cardiff City striker Chris Pike finally broke through on the stroke of half time. He blasted home a fierce penalty after fellow striker Tony Bird was held back in the penalty area by full back Zoltan Molner.
A minute after the break, Barry started to believe their dreams could come true when Pike darted down the right and crossed for Dave O'Gorman to blast home at the far post.
Vasutas threw on all three substitutes in their bid to get back into the tie and it paid off when Gabor Egressy found himself unmarked at the far post, to slot home the easiest of chances in the 63rd minute.
That rubbed out Barry's away goal advantage and put them 4-3 down overall - but they weren't finished. On 78 minutes a long clearance by goalkeeper Pat Mountain, in for the suspended Mark Ovendale, was flicked on by Pike. Substitute Craig Evans raced through to crash his shot into the net to send the tie into extra time.
