Befuddled by a long range shot from Robert Lee which hit Barthez's foot and popped up in to the net.

"Aprez vous," Barthez appeared to say to Wes Brown when the ball found itself sitting idly between goalkeeper and central defender. "Excusez moi," asked Brown, while Sergio Gonzalez nipped in and tapped the ball in to the empty net. "The most stupid goal of the Champions League," as Spanish newspaper Marca put it.

Barthez charged out of his penalty area in an attempt at clearing a through ball. Missed it, Diego Tristan didn't - curled said ball in to empty net for winning goal.

Had a go at collecting John Arne Riise's long throw over the head of Emile Heskey - failed. Michael Owen nodded home in to empty net. "Dodgy keeper," sang the Kop - Alex Ferguson was tempted to join in.

With not an opponent in sight he kicked the ball straight at Thierry Henry, who said "merci beaucoup" before tapping it in to . . another empty net. "Barthez is a Gooner," sang a gleeful Highbury.

6 Nov 25th: Arsenal 3, United 1

Ran from his line to collect a through-ball but upon gathering it released it in to Henry's path - "merci encore," said his French colleague, before slotting home. "Give it to Barthez," sang a delirious Highbury, a cry that extracted a deux fingered response from the beleaguered goalkeeper.
