SOCCER: Bray Wanderers 0 Sligo Rovers 0: BRAY WANDERERS showed their mettle for the second week running, frustrating Sligo at the Carlisle Grounds last night.

Having come from 2-0 down to win at St Patrick’s last week, Wanderers didn’t lie down for the stylish visitors.

Rovers had the better chances, but Bray worked hard to earn their point. Sligo probed well through midfield with Richie Ryan, John Russell and John Dillon prominent and Bray were thankful to troop off scoreless at the interval.

Picked out by Dillon, Russell should have given Sligo the lead after five minutes. Bray goalkeeper Matt Gregg was thankful the dipping drive from 25 yards clipped his crossbar.

Bray continued to battle but Sligo remained the more incisive side and they came close again on 25 minutes. Once more Dillon carved the opening to put Eoin Doyle in on goal but Gregg was quickly off his line to parry the shot out for a corner.

Bray winger Jake Kelly’s mishit volley flew over the top on the half hour. From Brendan Clarke’s goal kick, Bray’s defence were caught square to let Russell in on goal but he lobbed the ball over the bar.

Bray remained very much in the game, though, and after 48 minutes John Mulroy made space to get in a crisp right-foot shot that clipped the outside of the post.

Doyle should really have put Sligo ahead eight minutes later.

Gavin Peers’ diving header from a Ryan corner fell quickly to Doyle’s feet and he could only shoot straight into the arms of Gregg.

There was another let-off for Bray on 71 minutes when substitute Raffaele Cretaro was put through on goal only to lob wide.
