Denis Hickie appeared to have a glittering career in front of him. Two tries in his opening Five Nations campaign and three the following season underlined his claim to be the most potent finisher in Irish rugby.
In 1998 his fledgling career was shattered on Ireland's summer tour of South Africa. In the first Test his opposite number Stefan Terblanche scored four tries on his debut, while in the second Test Hickie suffered a shattered cheekbone. It was the last occasion to date that the St Mary's College wing wore the Irish jersey. Since then the 23-year-old, who has won 12 caps, slowly salvaged his career, not without the odd setback. His recent form has been excellent and despite his trials he remains the best finisher in Irish rugby. He should complete his rehabilitation during the Six Nations Championship when he ought to be restored to the senior team.
