Schools Rugby Leinster Senior Cup/Belvedere - 53 Newbridge College - 0: A ruthless, well-drilled Belvedere side provided an intimidating indication of their capabilities yesterday. An overwhelming forward eight set the platform for a refined back line to run riot in an eight-try massacre that adds further hype to the inevitable semi-final meeting with Blackrock.

It's difficult to name a stand out Belvedere player but captain and scrumhalf Paul O'Donohoe appears to be the vital cog in this machine. He snipes at every opportunity, delivers a crisp pass but also exudes a rugby intelligence. Irish under-19 prop Cian Healy lived up to his billing but was eclipsed by others in this immense pack. Lock Cathal Pendred and openside Eoin O'Carroll were prominent while number eight Jonathan Slattery consistently carried ball to the gain line and beyond.

For periods in the opening half Newbridge dominated possession and even camped in the Belvedere 22, only to be denied the oxygen required to put a player in space.

Belvedere led 15-0 at the interval thanks to tries from winger David Gibbons and O'Carroll and a conversion and penalty from outhalf Michael Dufficy. A Slattery double skip pass for the opening try was a highlight of the afternoon.

Newbridge almost claimed a runaway try on half-time when Cathal Geoghegan profited from Gibbons' fumble to race the length of the field. He chipped Colin Murphy and even bundled the retreating fullback into touch near the corner flag. Scandalously, Newbridge failed to control the ensuing lineout.

The floodgates opened early in the second half when Slattery ran a clever support line after O'Donohoe blocked a box kick from Bernard Flanagan before gathering and offloading. Next, Gibbons profited from a defence-splitting break by Murphy, who delivered the try-scoring pass. Eoin O'Malley got in on the act by barging his way over on 54 minutes.

At 34-0, Belvedere would have been forgiven for emptying the bench but they have some sizeable units in reserve, two of whom, Johnny McDevitt and David Synnott, brought the try count to seven.

Slattery rounded off an impressive display with his second try before Dufficy slotted his fifth conversion.
