Hosts Old Belvedere qualified for the semi-finals of the Smithwicks Floodlit Cup for the first time in three years when they easily accounted for Trinity at Anglesea Road last night.

Old Belvedere's first real attack resulted in a Ronan Browne try in the sixth minute, and with outhalf Robbie Rein slotting over the penalties, Trinity were always chasing the game.

Two penalties from the South African gave Belvedere an 11-3 lead after Trinity's impressive out-half Mark McHugh opened the students' account with a penalty in the 17th minute.

Then Belvedere flashed the ball wide to Browne again, and the wingers sped up the touch line to score his second try.

Rein kicked another penalty; but McHugh kept the students in touch with two of his own to leave his side trailing 19-9 at half-time.

But Belvedere moved to kill off their challenge early in the second half and achieved just that with two trys in the space of five minutes from fullback Pat Moore and Steve Sexton, both of which were converted by Rein.

A McHugh penalty and an excellent try by left wing Stephen Dowling, converted by McHugh, narrowed the gap somewhat; but Old Belvedere upped the pace again and Sexton dived over for his second try to make it 38-19.

The entertainment continued in the last quarter, but by that stage, the match was long over. Substitute Paddy Mettler got a consolation try two minutes from time; but Belvedere who had already gone further ahead with the fourth penalty from Rein, had the last say with a try by David Frame.
