All-Ireland Colleges SH A Semi-final/Kilkenny CBS 0-19 Gort CS 1-11: A powerful performance from their backs, plus a high-scoring show from Mark Bergin, helped Kilkenny CBS clinch a final date with Waterford De la Salle.
The Kilkenny school had too much for the Galway side in the first half at breezy Birr on Saturday. With Bergin shooting eight points (five frees), they opened up an 0-11 to 0-3 lead by the break. Gort were frustrated by the CBS half-back line.
Gort upped their efforts in the second half, using the strong breeze to pin the CBS back for long spells.
Points from Gerry Hennelly (two), Keith Killilea and centre back Aidan Harte helped to close the gap, but Bergin (two) and two excellent solo efforts from Adrian Stapleton saw the CBS well clear by the end of third quarter.
Gort, refusing to accept defeat, edged closer and a late flurry of 1-1 from Killilea, plus another point from Harte, put a better complexion on the score. However, top scorer Bergin had the final say, shooting his 13th point.
