Fran Berry lost his claim in the best possible fashion when partnering a 44 1/2 to 1 double with Trebizond and Jacks Estate at Tipperary yesterday evening.
Berry, son of Curragh trainer and former National Hunt champion jockey Frank, set the ball rolling aboard Trebizond in the one and a half mile Matrix Telecom Ltd Maiden. The Charles O'Brien-trained colt was ridden to join favourite Gaudi on the home bend, and stayed on best in the straight to score by three and a half lengths.
The 18-year-old recorded his 95th win half an hour later on Jacks Estate in the Cully's Construction Ltd Handicap. Declan Gillespie's charge was never far off the pace, and held on under pressure inside the final furlong to beat top-weight Storm Fromthe East by half a length.
The Moyglare Stud Stakes awaits Mandama after the daughter of Warning justified odds-on support on her debut in the EBF Fillies Maiden. John Murtagh made all on the home-bred Lady Clague filly but needed to be driven out to hold Alluring by a head. The runner-up spoilt her chance by veering left when asked for an effort over a furlong out.
