The rain. On the final day there were something like 800 journalists frantically booking themselves on flights out of London on Tuesday rather than Monday because it looked dangerously like the men's singles final would not be completed. The players were prepared for a 2.00 p.m. start, which was delayed because of the rain. Two delays, four sets and a lot of gazing at the sky later, the players finally finished their match at three minutes before 9.00 p.m. Wimbledon officials won't put a roof on any of the courts because it takes away from the unique event that Wimbledon has become and they won't install lights because, apparently, the courts get dewy and that makes it dangerous for the players. Surely science could crack this one?
