February 4th 1961, Cardiff Arms Park: Barbarians 6 South Africa 0
The match will be remembered by the players for the unforgettable conditions. Terrible weather and a vile pitch conspired to turn the match into a slog. In the end the Barbarians, with four Irish players, were able to inflict the only defeat on the all-conquering Springboks with two unanswered tries. Far from cavalier, it was the side's ability to adapt better which earned them the match.

The thrilling try scored by Gareth Edwards is best summed up by the words of his Welsh compatriot Cliff Morgan, who did the television commentary at the time.
"Kirkpatrick to Williams. This is great stuff. Phil Bennett covering, chased by Alistair Scown. Brilliant, oh that's brilliant. John Williams . . . Pullin, John Dawes. Great dummy. David, Tom David, the halfway line. Brilliant by Quinnell. This is Gareth Edwards. A dramatic start. What a score."

An Irish front row of Popplewell, Wood and Clohessy and a fully fit Simon Geoghegan on the wing. Geoghegan captured the mood when he received a flicked pass from Queensland's Pat Howard. Taking the ball on, Geoghegan made ground towards the Havelock Square end of Lansdowne Road for a wonderful touchdown.
