Athletics Boston MarathonTimothy Cherigat continued Kenya's dominance of the Boston Marathon yesterday, enduring unseasonably hot weather to win the world's oldest annually contested race over the classic 26.2-mile distance.
Cherigat finished the 108th edition of the race in an unofficial time of two hours 10 minutes 40 seconds. That fell short of the course record of 2:07.15 set by Cosmas Ndeti of Kenya in 1994. It was a Kenyan one-two-three as Robert Cheboror was next home in 2:11:49, ahead of Martin Lel in 2:13:38
Kenyan men have now won 13 of the last 14 Boston marathons and Cherigat's victory followed that of compatriot Catherine Ndereba in the women's race earlier in the day.
Ndereba won her third title after dramatically pulling away from Elfenesh Alemu of Ethiopia in the final mile.
Ndereba staggered over the finish line in an unofficial time of two hours 24 minutes 27 seconds - much slower than fellow Kenyan Margaret Okayo's course record of 2:20.43 - amid unseasonably hot New England weather.
