SD Galway 0 Mervue Utd 2:MERVUE UNITED claimed a deserved Galway derby success at Eamon Deacy Park last night.
A disappointing contest played in front of only 228 spectators between the bottom two teams in the Airtricity League First Division was decided by Mervue’s second-half opportunism.
SD Galway shaded the opening period, but weren’t clinical enough converting chances.
Mervue didn’t cause SD Galway too many problems initially, but, after the restart, Johnny Glynn’s side hit the front. Fifty eight minutes had elapsed when Shane Keogh’s splendid corner vexed the SD Galway defence and Pat Hoban headed Mervue ahead.
In the closing stages, Mervue continued to defend in a resolute fashion with skipper Mike Elwood and James Casserly solid.
Four minutes from time a flash of skill from Alan Murphy fashioned Mervue’s insurance goal for substitute Etanda Nkololo.
