LEINSTER SCHOOLS' VINNIE MURRAY SENIOR CUP:OUTHALF KEVIN McGrath found himself in the rare position of scoring a hat-trick of tries and still ending up on the losing side for Skerries Community College as they went down to Presentation Brothers Bray 45-22 in the Vinnie Murray Senior Cup quarter-final at UCD yesterday.

This was an all-out attacking extravaganza as Skerries entered into the spirit of the occasion with four tries – the other came from scrumhalf Eoghan Carron – in a rip-roaring, free-flowing encounter. In fact, McGrath couldn’t even claim the consolation of top try-scorer, as Leinster Under-19 wing Ferdia Kenny fizzed for four for Bray, with centres Karl Devin (two) and Ross Keating completing their set of seven tries.

Newbridge bagged three tries by fullback John Jennings, wing Phil O’Neill and hooker Charlie Kings to slip past a resolute De La Salle Churchtown 25-12 before a small crowd at Sydney Parade.

The winter conditions made handling difficult, and the Kildare school’s superiority in this area at crucial periods played a large part in the win.

For the most part, DLS held their nerve in the tackle and they had a strike runner supreme in fullback Scott Finley, who claimed a brace of tries, one converted by his cousin and outhalf Ian Burke.

Catholic University School took their chances to hold off a concerted late rally from CBC Monkstown 15-13 at Merrion Road. The winners clinched tries by right wing Colm Driver and centre David Beakie to build a 12-5 lead at the interval. CBC’s reply came from a five-pointer by outhalf Mark Rogers. Ultimately, CUS outhalf Mark Hiney’s penalty turned out to be the difference as CBC struck for a late, unconverted try into the corner by replacement wing Ryan Moore.

Wesley eased away from Templeogue 30-7 at Anglesea Road, tries coming from centre Robert Bracken, right wing Andrew Walsh and openside flanker Harry Bowers. In addition, they had outhalf Greg Hawe’s arrowed kicks to keep the scoreboard ticking over. He shot 15 points. Templeogue were restricted to a try by prop Tom O’Reilly, converted by Eoin Treacy.
