Paul Broadhurst birdied the final hole to retain his Portuguese Open title today. He closed with a five-under-par 67 to total 17-under-par 271 and win by a stroke from compatriot Anthony Wall.
The victory, his sixth European Tour title, gives 40-year-old Broadhurst a chance to play in his second Ryder Cup 15 years after his sole appearance. He has moved to eighth on the Cup points table.
Last year's win in Estoril had been Broadhurst's first for 10 years.
This time round, the Englishman, who had led the first two rounds and equalled the course-record 64 on the first day, began the final round a stroke adrift of Ricardo Gonzalez but the Argentine player immediately lost ground with an opening bogey.
Then Broadhurst charged into what proved to be an unassailable position with five birdies in six holes from the second, establishing a three-shot advantage by the turn.
Gonzalez's fellow-Argentine Andres Romero provided the challenge to Broadhurst for a time, moving to within a stroke after the Englishman double-bogeyed the 13th.
A better finish by Wall, who birdied three of the last four holes, took him past Romero and put Broadhurst under pressure. After Wall picked up a shot on the 18th for a 67 and, behind him, Broadhurst bogeyed the 17th, the pair were on equal terms.
However, after overshooting the green on the last, Broadhurst produced an accomplished chip to 18 inches to claim victory.
Peter Lawrie and Gary Murphy finished in a tie for 24th place on five-under after final rounds of 75 and 70 while Micheal Hoey dropped down in the standings have shot a closing round of 76.
