A special occasion at St Margaret's Golf Club yesterday brought the presidents of the main sporting bodies in the country together for the second annual outing between officials of the FAI, GAA, GUI and IRFU.
Pat Quigley of the FAI, Percy Shannon of the GUI and the IRFU's Noel Murphy led their teams while GAA president, Joe McDonagh, joined the get-together later in the evening.
However, while the presidents were enjoying their day, Niall Brophy, the immediate past president of the IRFU, was putting his golfing skills to good use when returning 40 points to take the overall prize.
Brophy, a former winger with Blackrock College and Ireland, was a model of consistency as the 17 handicapper from Foxrock had 20 points on each nine to win by three from Sean O'Laoire.
John Lyons from Portmarnock was best of the IRFU 10-man team with 36 points and he was followed by former international Paul Dean with 34 and Brian McLoughlin with 33. O'Laoire, the games administration officer at Croke Park, led home the GAA team.
Laurence St John, another Portmarnock member, also found the excellent St Margaret's greens to his liking in amassing 37 points.
The GUI were led home by Limerick six handicapper Jack Lynch. Lynch had 35 points with Malone's Billy Black next on 34.
The best team of the day was Roy Loughead (IRFU), Michael Delaney (GAA), Bernard O'Byrne (FAI) and Sean McMahon (GUI) who combined well for 90 points.
The Leinster Branch of the Golfing Union of Ireland have suspended one player for a year and another for three months following a probe into handicap irregularities in various classics.
It is part of a get tough policy which the GUI announced at its a.g.m. earlier this year. It is believed that the branch is also investigating other players.
