Colin Browne chipped for a birdie on the first playoff hole last night to eliminate Stewart Cink and Larry Mize and collect his first career win at the Greater Hartford Open in Cromwell, Connecticut.
Mize, the 1987 Masters champion, had a chance to win the tournament in the final round, but he missed a 12-foot par putt at the final hole. The trio returned to the 444-yard par-four 18th and Cink was the only player on the green in two, leaving himself a 12-footer.
Mize played first and chipped well past the cup before Browne knocked in his shot from about 22 feet, putting the pressure on Cink. The defending champion rolled his birdie try right, handing the victory to Browne.
Browne and Cink fired final round 67s to finish at 14-under 266. Mize, who began the final round in a three-way tie for the lead with Scott Hoch and Grant Waite, shot 69.
The 39-year-old Browne turned professional in 1984.
