Sailing: Irish Olympian David Burrows became the fifth Cork Dry Gin Sailor of the Year yesterday when King Constantine of Greece presented the 23-year-old Malahide single-hander with his award in Dublin, reports David Branigan.
The prize recognised his race win at Sydney during the Olympics in addition to his consistent performance in the build-up to the Games over the last three years. Among his successes was a third place at the Finn European Championships.
All the Irish team members were present for the awards and the achievement of having all three crews in the top 10 world rankings of their respective disciplines was also noted. Former team manager and two times Olympian Bill O'Hara received a special award for his contribution over two campaigns.
Athletics: Sonia O'Sullivan is still keeping an open mind over what race to target at next month's World Cross Country Championships in Dublin, reports Ian O'Riordan. But the decision to run the long or short course race (or both) will be made known well in advance of the Leopardstown event, now just under seven weeks away.
It is almost certain that O'Sullivan will aim for the 3,000 metres at the World Indoor Championships in Lisbon, her first test on the indoor circuit since the World Championships in Paris in March of 1997. The first indication of O'Sullivan's form came 12 days ago when she comfortably won the Australian cross country trials just days after returning from seven weeks altitude training. The next major test will come at the Melbourne Track Classic on March 1st, where she is set to run 3,000 metres before returning to Europe ahead of the World Indoors.
Motor sport: Jaguar are expected to unveil Austrian three-time world champion Niki Lauda as its new chief executive officer in London today. Lauda will work alongside American team boss Bobby Rahal, the former Indy Car driver.
Lauda's mental strength won him many fans and three world titles in 1975, 1977 and 1984.
