With 12 out of 15 rounds run in the 1998/99 RIAC Hewison Trophy Autotest Championship, Delgany driver Eamonn Byrne has clinched the title for the seventh time.
Not only that, he has won all 12 rounds and is now going for a unique clean sweep in this highly specialist branch of motorsport.
Regulations are now available for the Cork Motor Club's West Cork Rally run out of Clonakilty on March 20th-21st. This year's event will be the 21st anniversary of this popular stages rally. Gordon Percy of Cloughjordan beat his brother Richard by eight points to win the Jerry Murphy Race and Rally Tyres Munster Autocross Championship. Ger Brennan of Killarney won two rounds of the series to finish third, only four points behind Richard Percy.
Gordon Percy's Kawasaki motorcycle-engined special proved more effective over the more conventional specials of Richard Percy (Ford engine) and Brennan (Chevrolet V8 engine).
Classes were won by: Paddy O'Connor, Jimmy Devane (winner of the Kenquip RIAC National Autocross Championship), Jo Shinnors, Michael Linehan, Brian Turner, Gerard Lucey and Breda Piggott. The championship prizegiving will take palce on Friday, February 5th, at The Western Pass, Ardcroney, Co Tipperary (four miles north of Nenagh on the Borrisokane Road).
