It needed an exceptional goal from Cork's Ollie Cahill to separate two determined teams in the Premier Division National League tie at Turners Cross yesterday. Cahill struck just before half-time, evading the tackle of fullback Eamon McLoughlin before shooting past goalkeeper Shay Kelly from the edge of the penalty area.

The goal came when it looked as if a rugged UCD defence, in which centre back Tony McDonnell was in outstanding form, had succeeded in breaking the hearts of the Cork strike force.

UCD succeeded in gaining a grip for much of the second half. Yet they in turn found it difficult to outwit Cork's defence.

The one notable opportunity they created came 10 minutes into the second half when Jason Sherlock caught the Cork defence standing square with a clever pass that released Ciaran Kavanagh. He carried the ball to the edge of the penalty area but shot wide.
