Paul Carberry hopes to return to race riding at Roscommon next month, he said yesterday. The jump jockey has been on the sidelines since April after he collapsed at home after complaining of stomach pains and was taken to Cashel Hospital where he underwent an operation on his spleen.
"Hopefully I'll be back at Roscommon on September 13th," Carberry said. "I'm feeling good. I've been riding out for the last month for Noel Meade and at home (for trainer father Tommy). I've been riding work and schooling.
"My weight's just over 9st 7lb and I'm looking forward to coming back."
Despite his injury, Carberry still managed to finish second with 71 winners to Ruby Walsh in the Irish jockeys' championship.
On a broader front, Kayf Tara was yesterday quoted at 8 to 1 by Coral for this year's Melbourne Cup following the Godolphin colt's success at Deauville on Sunday.
Connections are aiming Kayf Tara at the Irish St Leger, before a tilt at the Melbourne race, which has yet to be won by an English trained horse.
"Kayf Tara is a top-class Group 1 performer over a variety of distances and represents our finest chance yet of a successful bid for the Melbourne Cup," said Simon Clare, of Corals. Godolphin, who have terrific strength in depth with four declared at the five-day stage for the Celebration Mile, are set to be represented by Josr Algarhoud and Cape Cross in Saturday's Goodwood contest.
The Godolphin challenge on the Group 2 contest is flexible, however, with soft ground specialist Fly to the Stars waiting to enter calculations should rain alter conditions.
Godolphin's fourth entry, last year's winner Muhtathir, is almost certain to bypass the race in favour of a trip to Deauville.
Outlining plans for the Goodwood race, Godolphin's racing manager Simon Crisford explained: "At this stage it looks like we'll be running Cape Cross and Josr Algarhoud and we will talk to Frankie (Dettori) in the middle of the week before finalising which horse he rides.
"We have confirmed an entry for Fly to the Stars in case the ground comes up soft, but Muhtathir has an alternative engagement at Deauville."
On his first start for Godolphin Josr Algarhoud ran out an impressive winner of the Group 3 Beeswing Stakes at Newcastle and Crisford added: "He's done well since Newcastle and the Celebration Mile is a natural step up the ladder for him."
It will be interesting to see the return of Cape Cross at Goodwood as the five-year-old has been absent since landing the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot on his seasonal debut.
