Young Ireland's 1-18 Tullaroan 1-9: Former All Stars DJ Carey and Charlie Carter rolled back the years when they inspired Gowran side Young Irelands to victory in the first Kilkenny semi-final at Nowlan Park yesterday.

The losers were finally killed off when David Carter raced through to score a 64th-minute goal to seal Irelands' place in the final on Sunday week.

However, they will of course have to wait another week to know who their opponents will be in the final.

The breeze-assisted winners didn't get anything easy during the opening half. Tullaroan were never headed until a pointed free from Carey in the 23rd minute nosed Irelands 0-8 to 1-4 in front.

Another free from Carey, his fifth score of the half, took Irelands into an interval lead of 0-9 to 1-4.

The eventual losers were guilty of some poor finishing shortly after the break, but they were particularly unlucky not to get any returns from a 33rd-minute penalty when Jimmy Coogan's well-struck effort came back in to play off the crossbar.

Virtually every time Irelands got the ball up the field they sneaked a point, and Charlie Carter was Tullaroan's tormentor-in-chief.

The former All Star grabbed a hat-trick of points as the Gowran team edged into a 0-14 to 1-7 lead by the end of the third quarter.

Tullaroan were always chasing the game from a distance after that and the winners finished by shooting a goal and two points without reply to register a somewhat flattering margin of victory.
