Tommy Carr has ruled himself out of contention for the vacancy created by the departure of Páidí Ó Sé from the Westmeath senior football position.

Carr's name was immediately linked with the job after Ó Sé resigned on Sunday evening, but yesterday he confirmed he would not be seeking the post.

"I've heard absolutely nothing, but I am not interested really. It's a tough world out there in management. Everyone is expecting to win All-Irelands now," said former Roscommon and Dublin manager Carr, who lives near Mullingar and plays junior football locally with Shandonagh.

Other names linked with the job include John O'Mahony, Martin McHugh and Dessie Dolan snr. Dolan is likely to stay with Leitrim for at least another year, however, after good championship performances against Sligo, Galway and Meath.

Ó Sé's sidekick Tomás O'Flaharta, whose term ended on Sunday also, is another name being mentioned. The pair were "a great double act", according to David O'Shaughnessy, who captained Westmeath to their first Leinster senior football crown last year.

He said: "Páidí was phenomenal. We were just talking about it on Sunday night - it was a privilege to work with him. Tomás and himself were a great double act, and they brought us to a new level.

"Ó Sé was emotional when he addressed the players after the Clare match, according to O'Shaughnessy. "I suppose it was Páidí's first venture outside Kerry as a manager, and he didn't know how it was going to go," he said.

"We always knew the management team's term was up after two years and Páidí has his own commitments. The journey from Ventry up to Westmeath is huge.

"But he will turn up again in intercounty football and the team that gets him will be very lucky."

Westmeath County Board chairman Seamus Whelan said the football board would begin the search for a new manager in the coming weeks.
