Gaelic Games/News round-up: Tom Carr has stepped down as Roscommon football manager following a series of disastrous results.

The announcemnet came last night following an emergency meeting of the players to discuss the team's lack of success in recent weeks.

Some sections of the squad and supporters were unhappy with the recent decision to drop forward Frankie Dolan from the squad, and the fact that performances have not improved since then has weakened the management's position. Carr's decision may pave the way for Dolan's return.

The county chairman Stephen Banahan last night confirmed that Carr has stepped down. In the search for a replacement the hope in Roscommon is that former Galway manager John O'Mahony will take the job, even on a short-term basis.

In the last two Sundays Roscommon suffered heavy defeats against Fermanagh and Monaghan in Division Two A of the National Football League.

The dismal performances of the team come at a bad time for Roscommon as the county board is currently trying to get a go-ahead from the Connacht Council and Croke Park to borrow over €1 million to service substantial debts.

The board have committed to providing a floodlit all-weather pitch in conjunction with the Kilbride club a few miles outside Roscommon town.

The Connacht Council are owed a considerable sum of money, and it is estimated that Roscommon will be paying off €100,000 a year for the next 15 years to service the €1 million loan.

Banahan has promised to give a full account of the board's finances to the next meeting of the board, scheduled for early April.
