Cavan eventually ran out comfortable winners over Down, putting in a strong second-half performance to win by 2-13 to 0-12 in the Ulster minor football championship Ballybay on Saturday evening.

Down opened the scoring after two minutes with a point by Marcus Miskelly but that was the only time they were in front as Cavan took control through Patrick Brady in midfield while up front Down had no answer to the power and pace of Mark McKeever and Sean Johnston.

Cavan led at half-time by 1-6 to 0-7, Sean Brady getting the goal in the 15th minute to open a four- point gap at that stage.

In the early minutes of the second half Down looked as if they would make a fight of it as they drew level twice in the first eight minutes but that was as good as it got for them.
