Cavan's new manager Eamonn Coleman made a winning start to his term when his side beat Section B opponents Queen's University, Belfast, at Kingscourt.
An experimental Cavan side dominated despite the absence of the injured Dermot McCabe and Peter Reilly and were 1-6 to 0-3 ahead after 25 minutes, Seán Brady getting the first of his two goals.
Although Queen's had a strong midfield partnership in Dick Clerkin and Martin McGrath the forwards squandered opportunities. By half-time, however, Queen's only trailed by four points, 1-8 to 0-7.
Points from Karl Oaks and Ciarán O'Reilly gave Queen's hope but Cavan hit back with two goals in two minutes, from Gerald Pierson and Brady, to stretch their lead to nine points. Cavan finished with five points without reply.
