Cavan 1-14 Donegal 2-8:CAVAN KICKED 14 wides for the second consecutive match but still outgunned Donegal in a top-notch Dr McKenna Cup tie at Kingspan/Breffni Park.
Totemic midfielder Gearóid McKiernan was in inspirational form and scored four points from play. McKiernan and Niall Smith both pointed without reply in the opening 45 seconds.
Donegal’s Stephen Griffin goaled after 18 minutes to put the visitors in front, 0-6 to 1-4.
Fielding a handful of 2011 minor and under-21 provincial medallists, Cavan continued to trail by 0-9 to 1-7 at the interval.
However once Niall McDermott goaled from a spot-kick in the 52nd minute, Cavan took control.
Niall Smith and Gearóid McKiernan (two) added points before the visitors grabbed what proved to be an injury-time consolation goal from sub Paddy McBrearty.
