SOCCER NEWS:CELTIC ARE set to challenge Tottenham for the signature of Craig Bellamy after the club's manager-in-waiting, Neil Lennon, identified the Welshman as the high-profile signing needed to boost his side.

Lennon and his representatives held talks with Celtic officials yesterday as confirmation the 38-year-old will permanently replace Tony Mowbray moved closer.

Meanwhile, Everton have signed striker Jermaine Beckford on a four-year deal. The 26-year-old scored 31 goals for promoted League One side Leeds United last season.

Crystal Palace face liquidation unless the consortium attempting to buy the stricken club can complete the deal by this afternoon. CPFC 2010 claim they have until 3pm to secure their takeover.

The FAI announced yesterday that Airtricity League clubs have voted in favour of remaining under the stewardship of the FAI.

The merger agreement was due to expire in 2011, but the 22 clubs voted unanimously to extend the deal, which saw the FAI take over the running of the league in 2007.
