Fancied players fell like flies in yesterday's Ulster Boys' Open Championship at Shandon Park, with the holder, Graeme McDowell from Rathmore, amongst the fallen. McDowell was dismissed in the quarter-finals by local lad Gary Wardlow, who won by 3 and 1. In this morning's semi-finals Wardlow meets clubmate Robin Symes, who stormed through the day with a pair of 6 and 5 victories. The other semi-final will feature Lee Dalton (Waterford) and Mark O'Sullivan (Galway). Dalton beat 1996 runner-up Ian Griffin (Balbriggan) by 2 and 1. Dark horse O'Sullivan, a 16year-old who plays off three, had a 6 and 5 win over Paddy Kennedy (Strabane), who shocked favourite David Jones by one hole in the third round.
