Charlesland victor

A never-say-die attitude saw Vincent Kenny secure victory in the Captain's Prize at Charlesland

A never-say-die attitude saw Vincent Kenny secure victory in the Captain's Prize at Charlesland. And in the process of winning, Kenny was part of a little bit of history at the Co Wicklow course. For a long time Gerry Smyth had been leader in the clubhouse on the final day only for Kenny - playing in the final three-ball - to sink a 12-foot putt on the 18th green to force a play-off, the first time there had been such a finish to this event. The three hole play-off saw Kenny get down in two from a bunker to deny Smyth, who had birdied the final hole.

It was a remarkable comeback by Kenny. His effort appeared to be faltering when he double bogeyed the 15th and 16th in regulation play. However, he bounced back showing great nerve to hole testing par putts on both the final two holes. This left him tied with Smyth on 140 over the two-day competition. To then go on and secure victory in the play-off made all the effort worthwhile.
