Charlton may pay high price

Charlton's manager, Alan Curbishley, was given a particularly strong incentive to deliver a rousing team talk beforehand

Charlton's manager, Alan Curbishley, was given a particularly strong incentive to deliver a rousing team talk beforehand. He has been promised £10 million if he keeps the club in the Premiership, though that looks easier said than done.

On Saturday they face a trip to Everton, followed by a home game against Blackburn. Charlton can at least count on the backing of a full end at Goodison Park given that they have offered their fans free travel as a gesture of thanks for their support.

George Graham's warning to his Spurs players that they too would "find themselves sitting in the stand" if they failed to pull their weight in the remaining six (ostensibly meaningless) matches was an indication that Charlton could expect few favours last night.

The home side were ahead inside five minutes. Andy Hunt's flick released Paul Mortimer down the left and, although his cross looked to be too deep, Graham Stuart swivelled to hook the ball to the edge of the area, where the captain Mark Kinsella lashed a low shot beyond Ian Walker's right hand.

But as the persistent wind and rain became stronger so did Tottenham's pressure. Iversen went close with a shot, then narrowly failed to connect with a deflected Anderton cross at the far post. But somehow Charlton held out until half-time as Anderton, in particular, made his influence tell.

Chances came and went at either end in a frenetic start to the second half. Charlton looked to have a good claim for a penalty turned down when Mauricio Taricco held up Kinsella.

Charlton had a let-off when Nielsen's powerful volley from the edge of the area was blocked by Carl Tiler, but Andy Petterson was allowed no such protection in the 57th minute when Spurs equalised.

Iversen burst forward, exchanged passes with Anderson and proceeded unchallenged to fire into the bottom right-hand corner.

Petterson again was left totally exposed on 78 minutes as Spurs took the lead. Anderton's corner found Campbell unmarked in the area, and he stooped to steer a diving header.

Spurs wrapped it up in the last two minutes when first Dominguez weaved his way past tired Charlton legs to score the third and then Ginola scored the fourth to put an unfair gloss on the proceedings for Spurs.
